Essential oils can be a great tool for sleep, whether you struggle with insomnia, sleep apnea, or are simply having a bad day and need some help relaxing. Smelling the oils, either through a diffuser or through topical application, can help our brain chemistry to balance in such a manner that promotes sleep.
“Cells inside the nose detect smells in our environment, and send information to the brain, via the olfactory nerve…The information about smell goes immediately to the limbic system of the brain, which includes regions like the amygdala that control emotional reactions and memory.” (Breus). This means that smells are taken in through the olfactory nerves (which we smell with) and translated into messages in the brain, such as memory triggers or emotions. Because our emotions can be effected by smell, the use of essential oils can be very effective at calming the mind and creating relaxation.
Aroma therapy, while a recent trend in holistic health, is an ancient practice and “for years, scientists have been conducting studies into the sleep-promoting, stress-relieving, pain-reducing and mood-regulating benefits of essential oils” (Brues). They help both directly with sleeping and with relaxation and stress-relief. One of the biggest inhibitors of sleep in this day and age is stress and the inability to properly relax. Using essential oils as a sleep aid has become more and more popular because it is natural, safe, and effective.
